Gonzalez has formulated his own method of navigating the bloodstock world and has been rewarded in dividends. Checkmate’s top graduates include three stellar fillies found for modest prices through thorough research and an emphasis on identifying athletic individuals with hidden potential in their pedigrees.
Multiple Grade 1 winning millionaire Spiced Perfection was a mere $6,500 yearling purchased, and pinhooked through the Checkmate banner as a 2-year-old.
They followed that up with the purchase of Expo Gold, who the couple uncovered in the last book of Keeneland November in foal to Daredevil for $13,000. That foal amounted to be multiple Grade 1 winner and Preakness victor Swiss Skydiver.
Most recently, Gonzalez purchased broodmare Patti’s Regal Song for $50,000. Two foals later, she would become the dam of Grade 1 CCA Oaks winner Maracuja.
